A tastefully renovated mid-century home

This typical 1960s home nestled in the heart of Quebec City's Sillery neighbourhood recently underwent a complete transformation.

This project was masterfully led by designer Guillaume Boulanger of Maison du Design, in close collaboration with the owners, Azélie Pilon and her partner.

The challenge was to renovate this mid-century home to today's standards of comfort and aesthetics without betraying its architectural spirit.

FENIX Verde Kitami Bathroom

Materials combining design and durability

For this project, FENIX® and Formica® brand materials quickly emerged as the obvious choices. FENIX® surfaces, known for their ultra-matte appearance, silky feel and durability, were used in several areas to make the furniture and cabinetry: Verde Kitami (J0794) was used for the family bathroom, and Beige Luxor (0719) for the back kitchen and laundry room. This created harmonious, refined and timeless rooms, where every detail contributes to a serene and sophisticated atmosphere.

In the en-suite bathroom, the InDepth Surfacing™ laminate in Steamed Luster Walnut (8259) stole the show. “I was very surprised to discover a laminate that so closely mimics the walnut effect we were looking for,” says Azélie. This choice made it possible to combine the warmth of wood with the durability of the product, while staying within the project budget.

Beyond aesthetics, the owners were keen on choosing sustainable and local materials. Indeed, as co-owner of La Pièce and editor-in-chief of Canapé magazine, Azélie makes it a point to promote Quebec craftsmanship and locally sourced materials.

“We always strive to encourage and highlight companies that are socially and environmentally conscious,” she says. The fact that Formica Canada, located in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, manufactures Formica® and FENIX® brand products was therefore a key factor in the choice of materials.

The couple wanted to create a living space that was beautiful, functional and sustainable, where each material was chosen with care and sensitivity. “FENIX® is where innovation meets design. It's a surface that combines softness, elegance and durability. We’re very happy with our choice,” concludes Azélie Pilon.

The project stands as proof that innovative, responsible materials can bridge past and present — and their Sillery home is the living result. The residence now embodies the best of both worlds, perfectly combining the charm of yesterday with the comfort of today.
